Generation 3 Summary

(Code Book)

This data set contains all the offspring of Generation 2(G2) interviewed at any wave. The data set contains all Best Estimate diagnoses from all Waves. The diagnoses met probable or definite DSM-III-R criteria at Wave 3 or DSM-IV criteria at Waves 4 and 5. The diagnoses that are wave only are coded yes if G3 had a diagnosis in the time period between the last interview and the wave denoted in the label. The cumulative diagnoses are coded yes if G3 had a diagnosis at any of the waves in which they were interviewed. It is possible to determine which waves the person was interviewed at by using the variables w3, w4 and w5. There are a number of variables where the label says ‘wave 3 or wave 4’. These variables were used for the definitive paper on G3 (Weissman MM, Wickramaratne P, Nomura Y, Warner V, Verdeli H, Pilowsky DJ, Grillon C, Bruder G. Families at high and low risk for depression: a 3-generation study. Archives of General Psychiatry. Jan;62(1):29-36. 2005 ).For a copy of the paper click on publications on the home page under resources. The variable that defines whether G3 is from high or low risk families is GROUP. High risk is defined as coming from a family where one or more G1 has MDD. The GROUP4 variable takes into account G2 and G1 MDD status. The data set also includes a variety of other data collected at each wave including overall functioning, social adjustment, temperament, parent-child interaction, anxiety sensitivity, inhibition as well as life events, marital adjustment and family environment data reported on by Generation 2 (their parents). For a complete list of data collected at each wave go to the Data Summary tab and click on Assessment Summary.
